Abstract: In 1088, Su Song, the famous scientist in ancient China, invented a Water-powered Armillary Sphere. A study of his family mottos reveals that his father Su Shen ordered him to do scientific and technological exercises since his childhood and this turned out to be an important reason for his becoming a scientist in later years.
