Abstract: The type, size, and location of defects on composite insulator were simulated to obtain the axial and radial electric field distribution curves along the insulator shed, and then the distortion rate and the maximum field intensities of axial and radial electric field were calculated. The results show that the radial electric field is more sensitive to the defect. The types and location of defects can be obtained by analyzing the radial electric field distribution along the insulator shed.
